A lot of Americans just don't know how to go about saving money simply because they are unable to create a budget based on their weekly or monthly income. If you aren't able to create and stick to a budget you will almost always overspend and never have enough money to pay off your debt to live a debt free life. The first thing you need to crack down on is unnecessary shopping; you need to stop shopping just for the sake of shopping. Always make a list of all the necessary things you need before you enter the store and then stick to what is on your list. Choose stores that offer special promotions, sales etc. you also need to make sure that you don't pull out your credit card for everything you purchase. Paying in cash should always be your biggest priority.

Budget Tips

The first step you can take towards saving money is to take a long hard look at what you really need. You need to be critical here; for instance think 'Do I really need a cable T.V connection even though I never have the time to watch television?' or "do I really need to purchase the latest flat screen high definition television?" Of course not, because you don't have the time to spend watching television. You will also need to make tough decisions such as 'Do I really consume fifty packs of popcorn a month?' Or more like 'Do I really need to?' once you begin to answer these questions truthfully you will begin to understand just how much money you are wasting each month and how much you can save.

You need to determine your level of income as compared to your expenses. So for instance if you earn $500 a month your expenses shouldn't go over $500 including charges made to your credit card. A good way to achieve this is to record all your expenses throughout the month. You need to make sure that you note down every single expense incurred during the month.

Once you are able to compare your expenses to your income you will probably notice that your expenses are actually brimming over your income which is one reason why you find yourself in debt you can't seem to dig yourself out of. The hardest part is actually scratching off the expenses you can live without, just to bring down your expenses. Your objective should be to lower your expenses well below the income line.

Sticking to a Budget

The best way to stick to a budget is to keep your eye on your goal for instance if your goal is to save up a certain amount of money you should keep an eye on your savings. Make sure that you make it a habit to stick to your list of expenses, making bills your highest priority. After bills come food, clothes and everything else follows after that. The most important part of sticking to a budget is to get your priorities straight; once you manage to do that everything falls into place pretty easily.
